Best 10 Albums of 2019
As the year comes to an end, list season begins. And who am I to keep my dear readers from an unsolicited and subjective “best of” list? In no particular order, my top ten albums of 2019 and then some:
1. Charly Bliss: Young Enough
The sugar rush and split tongue that comes from eating a piece of candy with a hidden razor inside it.
2. PUP: Morbid Stuff
Still a righteous underdog, but knows the Sad Boi shtick won’t (and shouldn’t) last forever. PUP recognizes that you have to get better eventually.
3. Sir Babygirl: Crush On Me
A haunted house painted pink and run by a bisexual Barbie doll.
4. Mannequin Pussy: Patience
Knowing yourself and feeling the entirety of the emotional spectrum is the most punk thing you can do.
5. Insignificant Other: i’m so glad i feel this way about you
The all encompassing crush that comes with having crushes. Emo painted bubblegum pink.
6. Control Top: Covert Contracts
Dousing itself in gasoline and lighting itself on fire. Screaming at you to quit your day job already!
7. Jenny Lewis: On the Line
Unshakeable storytelling too detailed to not be true. Lewis is a flashy and troubled troubadour of a protagonist.
8. Rosie Tucker: Never Not Never Not
Cockeyed and brilliantly sharp narrative. A poem inside an album.
9. Leggy: Let Me Know Your Moon
Minimalistic yet frenzied. A certain sweetness surrounds each serrated hook.
10. 100 gecs: 1000 gecs
Everything you loved about the autotuned pop of the mid 2000s combined with your short-lived moment with Skrillex and trap rap. What my manic episodes sound like in the best way possible.
Longlist:
11. GRLwood: I Sold My Soul to the Devil When I was 12
12. Rico Nasty: Anger Management
13. Megan Thee Stallion: Fever
14. Sass: Chew Toy
15. Girlpool: What Chaos is Imaginary
16. Cherry Glazerr: Stuffed and Ready
17. Empath: Active Listening: Night on Earth
18. Potty Mouth: SNAFU
19. Lizzo: Because I Love You
20. Carly Rae Jepsen: Dedicated
21. black midi: Schlagenheim
22. Oso Oso: Basking in the Glow
23. DUMP HIM: Dykes to Watch Out For
24. Great Grandpa: Four of Arrows
25. Angel Olsen: All Mirrors
26. WAAX: Big Grief
27. Lunch Duchess: Crying For Fun
28. Cheekface: Therapy Island
29. Julia Jacklin: Crushing
30. Lana Del Rey: Norman Fucking Rockwell
That’s all for this year! I listened to over a gecs worth of albums this year, so giving you just thirty was tough. Catch ya in 2020 suckers.
